Installation & care

Getting it down, and keeping it green.

We pride ourselves on supplying the best, thickest, healthiest lush green turf. Here is how to install it and care for it once it is yours.

Five steps, in order

Sod is a living thing with a clock on it. Work through these in sequence and it will root properly the first time.

  1. Prepare the ground

Use our fertilizer for optimum root fertility — roughly 4 kg per 1,700 sq ft of the area you are covering.

Rake it into the soil to a depth of 5–10 cm before your sod arrives.

  2. Lay the sod

Lay directly off the delivery where you can. If that is not possible, unroll all of it within 24 hours.

Begin along the longest straight stretch. Keep joints tight without overlapping, and stagger the rows like brickwork.

Roll the area within the first week to eliminate air pockets.

  3. Water it in

Water each completed area immediately with 2–3 cm of water. Ground beside concrete or asphalt, and anything on a mound, will need more.

Water daily through the first week. Every other day is usually enough in the second.

Adjust for temperature, soil and season — avoid letting it dry out or go mushy.

  4. First mow

Mow within 7–10 days, and never cut more than a third of the height at once.

Aim for 4–7 cm — about 1½ to 2½ inches.

Keep a gas mower idling through the early mows so it does not uproot the new sod.

  5. Keep it fed

Sod leaves us at prime nutrient levels. Start a fertilizer program 30–60 days after installation.

If the lawn you replaced had insect problems, watch the new sod closely.

Stagger the rows

Start along the longest straight stretch. Keep the joints tight without overlapping, and offset each row against the last — the same running bond a bricklayer uses. Staggered seams knit together; aligned seams open up.

  • We recently had sod delivered , and I honestly can’t say enough good things about them. The grass is absolutely beautiful—thick, rich green, and so soft underfoot. You can tell it was grown with care. It instantly made our yard feel like a whole new space.

I’ve bought sod in the past from other places, and nothing has ever come close to this quality. There were no weeds, no gaps, and every roll was healthy and consistent. It looked like a golf course the moment it went down!

On top of that, the people at North Range were amazing to deal with—friendly, responsive, and genuinely helpful. They gave great advice on installation and aftercare, and you can tell they really care about their product and customers.

If you’re thinking about sodding your yard, don’t look anywhere else. North Range Sod is the real deal. We’re beyond happy and would recommend them 100 times over

  • My partner had two sod jobs going today and needed a few more rolls. It's the first time that I went, and the service was great! Sod looks good, and I also got a few very helpful suggestions to make sure that the two jobs turn out well. Easy to find and price was also great!

  • North Range Sod has excellent product and customer service. Highly recommend! Thank You
