How to use fertilizer
Eight steps, in order. Start with the soil test — everything after it depends on what comes back.
- Conduct a soil test to determine nutrient levels and pH.
- Select the right fertilizer for what you are growing.
- Follow the recommended application rates.
- Apply at the appropriate time, and distribute it uniformly.
- Water the lawn adequately after application.
- Follow the safety precautions on the package.
- Store fertilizer properly.
- Talk to us if you want advice for your own lawn.
Common questions
How do I work out how much I need?
Measure the lawn area, find the application rate for your fertilizer, and calculate from there.
Rates differ between products, so always check the package. Soil condition, grass type and regional recommendations all shift the answer.
Should I fertilize before or after rain?
Schedule it a few days before heavy rain, or wait several days after rain has subsided.
That gives it time to penetrate the soil and be absorbed instead of washing away.
How long after fertilizing can I mow?
Wait at least 24–48 hours.
How often should I fertilize?
Every 6–8 weeks.
A common schedule is early spring, late spring, late summer, and once more just before winter.
